If you've been following the Ashes series, by now you would have probably heard about the Kevin Pieterson (KP) wicket incident. Basically what happened what that Ryan Harris delivered a delivery to KP and he missed it and went through to the keeper, Brad Haddin, Haddin then appealed because he thought that KP had nicked it. However umpire Aleem Dar didn't think so and the Aussie captain chose to review it but the decision stayed the same even after the review upon which Aussie captain Ricky Ponting become furious and had some things to say to the Umpire. Here's the video:
Now my first impression when I saw the review. I thought it was out because hot-spot showed a dot there and I think that was the reason why the Aussies were furious, because hot-spot did show a dot which they thought probably meant that there was a nick. However there are a few things that I think are worth noticing:
The bowler Ryan Harris, Smith and Watson, the slips didn't appeal at all, in fact they didn't even budge which shows that Ponting reviewed this decision only based on Haddin's opinion. Also if you look closely the ball goes past the bat without deviating in any way in its line or its rotation. When there's even a faint nick the ball's rotation changes dramatically.
Now on Ponting's behavior towards the umpire, first of all this is absolutely stupid to argue with an umpire on a decision that has been reviewed, I mean how is it the Umpire's fault? He didn't give it out and you reviewed it and it's still Not Out, end of story. ICC fined him 40% of his match fee (approx Aus. $5,400) but I think he deserved a match ban. You may think that's a bit too harsh but the way he's arguing with the umpire over a reviewed decision, he deserved more punishment. Moreover in the past other players like Ganguly and Inzamam received match bans when they argued with the umpires and at that time the review system didn't even exist.
That's my opinion about the whole thing, let me know what you guys think in the comments.
